Sharks Still Ply Waters Off Stinson Beach

There´s still no swimming allowed at Stinson Beach.

Officials had planned to reopen the beach today – five days after a Bolinas man was attacked by a shark. But lifeguard Xavier Agnew says a diver spotted a shark last night about 100 yards from shore.

The beach will remain closed to swimmers and surfers through the weekend. Agnew says knee-deep wading is acceptable but still dangerous.

Last week´s incident was the second attack at Stinson in the past four years. Twenty-four-year-old Lee Fontan was attacked by a large shark last Friday while surfing at the mouth of the Bolinas Channel. He received 100 stitches for four bites on his leg, arm and shoulder.

Lifeguards say shark sightings prompt them to close the beach about once every summer.
