Calaveras County authorities say a jail inmate is dead after an apparent suicide.
Sheriffs captain Steve Mathews says 40-year-old inmate Marcus Butier of Orinda was discovered unconscious in his cell yesterday morning. Deputies say the inmate used a bed sheet to hang himself. Butier was in Calaveras County jail on arson charges. An investigation is underway.
