License Bill Opponents Gear Up For Referendum

Opponents of a new law enabling illegal immigrants to obtain California drivers´ licenses can begin collecting voter signatures to try to overturn the statute.

Valid signatures of at least 373,816 registered voters must be gathered by December 7 to force a referendum on the legislation.

Supporters of the new law say millions of illegal immigrants drive without licenses and that allowing them to obtain licenses will make sure they can pass a driving test and have auto insurance.

Critics contend the new law will create security problems.

A group of Republicans announced shortly after the law was approved by lawmakers that they would try to overturn it by putting it on the ballot.
