Farm Pollution Bill Passes

Legislation to impose air pollution controls on farms has passed a state Assembly committee on its second try.

The bill by state Senator Dean Florez of Shafter was approved today by the Assembly Appropriations Committee after Florez agreed to a series of amendments and a group of San Joaquin Valley children lobbied for the measure.

The bill went down to defeat last week in the same committee, and Florez claimed that Democratic leaders were bottling up the bill so that freshman Assemblywoman Nicole Parra of Hanford wouldn´t have to vote on legislation that would be controversial in her district. Parra denied that she was the reason for the bill´s defeat.
