Senate leaders have announced a budget compromise that could break California´s 24-day deadlock over spending and taxes. The proposal would finance the state´s existing $10.7 billion deficit and impose more than $11 billion in cuts to all state services.
The plan still need approval from the state Assembly. It also must be signed by Governor Davis.
In a victory for Republicans, the plan contains no new taxes — although many of the deep spending cuts they called for are not included in the deal.
Senate President Pro Tem John Burton, a Democrat, and Republican Leader Jim Brulte say the Senate plans to consider the proposal at a rare Sunday night session.
