Possible State Budget Compromise

Two lawmakers from both parties have a compromise budget plan they plan to share with the Legislature, in an effort to break the deadlock. Assemblymen Keith Richman, a Republican from Granada Hills, and Joseph Canciamilla a Democrat from Pittsburg, say they have a plan they hope will attract interest from both parties.

Neither of them would disclose their proposal but reports from prior discussions the two lawmakers have had with others indicates that they are interested in exchanging Republican support for higher taxes for Democratic support for a spending cap.

Governor Davis said he has not studied the proposal but would support anything that reinvigorates the budget debate. The lawmakers are expected to unveil their plan later today at a news conference.
