Cool nights add color to apples

Cooler nighttime temperatures encourage apple growers in the San Joaquin Valley and Mother Lode. The California Apple Commission says the cooler weather helps the fruit develop excellent color. That will aid its marketability. Right now, the commission says farmers are selling apples at prices barely above the break-even point. Farm prices average about 30 cents a pound for apples that sell at retail for more than a dollar a pound
