Potential Snag Could Nullify Measure K

Voters in Tuolumne County who have been studying up on all the measures and propositions on this November´s ballot may have one fewer local measure to worry about.

Measure K, the tax proposal for the City of Sonora that would increase taxes on hotel and motel rooms, might be in conflict with Proposition 218 which passed 8 years ago.

It says a general tax measure can only be on a city´s ballot if there is also a city council election on the ballot.

Sonora had a city council race back in March, but now won´t have one until 2006.

City Attorney Richard Matranga will advise the city council next week of the problem.

It´s expected the votes on the measure just won´t count in the end.
