Cutbacks, Not Layoffs in State Dept of Justice

Attorney General Bill Lockyer says he can avoid threatened layoffs despite cutbacks in the office´s budget.

Lockyer had warned Department of Justice workers in July that he might have to lay off as many as 280 employees in the legal division because of a pending 10 million dollar budget cut.

The layoffs would have included about 12 percent of the attorneys — about 118 lawyers.

The law enforcement side wouldn´t have been affected.

The office was able to save money instead by delaying filling vacancies and other measures without resorting to layoffs and program cuts.
