Same Sex Marriage Cases Continue in Court

A second round of arguments is set for today in the continuing legal battle over gay marriage.

A San Francisco judge is presiding over a pair of lawsuits that are trying to get the state´s ban on same-sex marriage declared unconstitutional. During yesterday´s arguments, a lawyer for a group of same-sex couples told the court that California can no longer claim to have a legitimate reason for denying gays and lesbians the right to marry. But an attorney for the state argued that the state should continue to uphold the existing definition of marriage as part of an important tradition.

The judge has indicated he will rule sometime after mid-January.
