Two women were married this morning at San Francisco City Hall as Mayor Gavin Newsom made good on his plan to allow same sex couples to wed.
The mayor´s spokesman, Peter Ragone, says Phyllis Martin and Del Lyons, lesbian activists who have been a couple for 51 years, were married by County Assessor Mabel Teng a little after 11 a-m.
San Francisco city officials say they will issue more same-sex marriage licenses throughout the day. The move is considered a political and legal challenge to
California law.
The marriage ceremony was coordinated by Mayor Gavin Newsom and top city officials. It is intended to get a step ahead of an injunction request against same-sex marriages that a conservative group, the Campaign for California Families, promised to file tomorrow.
