New Ban On Personal Plates

A federal judge in Sacramento permanently barred the state from issuing new vehicle license plates that promote the interest of private nonprofit organizations.

The ban was sought by an anti-abortion group after the Legislature refused to pass a law allowing a plate with the words “Choose Life.” The California-based Women´s Resource Network called the ruling a victory.

A U.S. district judge says state law that lets the Legislature decide which groups are featured on the plates is unconstitutional. Under the judge´s order the DMV is able to continue issuing Yosemite National Park license plates.

The plates raise about $1 million a year for the Yosemite Fund. The money goes to help park upkeep.
