Olympic Medallist Wins Copperopolis Road Race

A little-known bicycle race that has been held for many years in Milton draws riders from around the nation and the world.

Saturday, world-class cyclist Filip Meirhaeghe of Belgium won the Category 1/2/Pro event in the 23rd annual Copperopolis Road Race, completing the five-lap, 105-mile course in 4 hours, 53 minutes. Starting with 87 competitors, the field dwindled over the miles, with just 21 riders crossing the finish line.

Most of the competitors in the Category 1/2/Pro division of Saturday´s Copperopolis Road Race still were closely packed as they neared the end of the first 21-mile lap of their five-lap, 105-mile event. Enterprise photo by John Hall
