BALCO Founder Conte Gets Eight Months

San Francisco, CA — The mastermind behind a scheme to provide professional athletes with undetectable performance-enhancing drugs, has been sentenced to eight months in prison today in San Francisco federal court.

The time behind bars was part of a plea deal between Victor Conte and federal prosecutors. Conte will spend four months in prison and four months on home confinement.

He´s the founder of the Bay Area Laboratory-Cooperative. Two of the three remaining defendants in the case were expected to be sentenced later today.

The BALCO steroid scandal prompted professional sports to stiffen steroid policies and thrust performance-enhancing drugs into the public spotlight.
