Lowes Project To Go Before City Council Wednesday

Sonora, CA — The Sonora City Council will once again take up the issue of a proposed Lowes Home Improvement Center to be built at the corner of Old Wards Ferry and Sanguinetti Roads near Wal-Mart.

The project received unanimous support from the city planning commission last month after making revisions to the design and site plan. Before the council will be three appeals filed by opponents of the project.

The Group Citizens For Responsible Growth has been pushing for environmental and economic impact reports on the project. Appeals were also filed by David Evans, who owns a Sonora lighting store and the group Voters Choice.

Those against the project are concerned about traffic and environmental issues, as well as the effect the big box store would have on smaller locally owned businesses.

The meeting gets underway at 5:00 Wednesday at the council chambers on Washington Street in Sonora.
