A persistent budget deficit has Calaveras County officials pondering the possibility of potential layoffs.
The Enterprise reports that County Administrative officer Tom Mitchell has reported to supervisors that there may be a $1.5 million budget shortfall due to increased staffing costs. Mitchell says he wants to meet with department heads to formulate a contingency plan in case layoffs are neccessary .
