Ex- Ione High Teacher Called a Sexual Predator

Sean Rabé

Anthony Carlin, 62, was declared a sexually violent predator by a Santa Clara County jury last month. Carlin was a teacher and coach at Ione High School from 1967 to 1974. He moved from Amador County in 1975.

Carlin´s arrest history for molesting boys dates back to 1983, when he was arrested for molesting a boy under the age of 12 while on a YMCA Trailblazers camping trip. He pleaded guilty and was put on probation for the offense.

He was then arrested in 1987 in Alameda County for molesting another boy under the age of 14 following a jet ski event. Carlin pleaded no contest to that molestation charge and was sentenced to prison for three years.

After his release and while on parole, he molested another young boy he met at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Carlin pleaded guilty to that offense in 1991 and was sentenced to 16 years in state prison.

Carlin was due to be released in 2000, but Santa Clara County filed a case alleging Carlin was a sexually violent predator. Under California´s sexual predator law, sex offenders who have been convicted of specified sex offenses against two or more victims may be kept in custody beyond their original parole dates if they are found to have a diagnosed mental disorder that puts them at a significant risk to re-offend.

“He has admitted to molesting at least 12 victims but only has been caught three times,” said Santa Clara Deputy District Attorney Dana Overstreet. “Those offenders who have been deemed sexually violent predators are retried every two years, so the more information we receive about him the better chance we have of keeping him in jail for the rest of his life.”

Overstreet said that if there were possible victims in Amador County, Carlin could not be prosecuted for those offenses due to the statute of limitations. However, she said, the information could be used to prevent Carlin from being paroled.

“Although his arrest history dates back to 1983, authorities believe that his offending behavior may have begun much earlier,” she said.

Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact Santa Clara District Attorney Investigator Carl Lewis at (408) 792-2941.
