Proposed Abortion Measure Expected To Go Before Voters

A proposed ballot initiative that would require doctors to notifiy the parents of girls 17 and younger seeking abortions could go before voters.

Backers of the measure expect to have the required number of signatures to get the proposal on the ballot.

The California Parental Notification Act would require a 48-hour waiting period from the time parents are notified before the abortion could be performed. The proposed constitutional amendment requires nearly 600-thousand signatures.

Although the measure has drawn wide-spread support, The American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood have vowed to fight it.
