Federal Officials Seek To Increase Stanislaus Logging

Sonora, CA — Federal forestry officials say increased logging in the Stanislaus National Forest could reduce fire danger and ease economic concerns in several California counties.

Officials conducting a review of the Stanislaus say the new Sierra Nevada Framework would allow logging to increase in the region and reduce the threat of wildfire in all of the Sierra´s national forests.

Lawmakers are concerned that the low volume of logging in the Stanislaus is causing production to fall in two Sierra Pacific sawmills, which is having a negative economic effect on Tuolumne, Calaveras and Amador counties.

Officials say they want to ramp up logging production by nearly 70 percent in fiscal year 2006.
