Man Suffers Broken Leg After Rafting Accident

Big Trees State Park, CA — A 53-year-old El Cerrito man has a broken ankle but is otherwise safe after a rafting accident on the Stanislaus River yesterday.

Calaveras County Sheriff´s Department Search and Rescue was deployed at about 6:30 in the evening to locate and rescue Randall Smith who had been rafting about a mile from the bridge crossing near the South Grove camping area.

The Sheriff´s Department says Smith suffered his injuries when he was thrown from the raft and his leg became wedged between the boat and some equipment.

Rescuers apparently used a helicopter to free Smith´s leg and transport him to a local hospital.

The Ebbetts Pass Fire Department and CDF also took part in the rescue operation.
