First Human Case Of West Nile Virus

Sonora, CA — With the first case of West Nile Virus hitting relatively close to home, Mother Lode residents should be on the look out for stagnant water.

A 47-year-old Tulare County man is confirmed to be infected with West Nile Virus, the first human case in California this year.

The state Department of Health Services announced the infection Wednesday. The agency says the man sought medical care for a fever and headache in early June and is recovering.

The virus has already been detected in 34 of California´s 58 counties in birds, mosquitoes, chickens and horses.
