Meth Addicts Becoming Addicted To Copper Wiring

Sonora, CA — Quickly moving to the top of the list of items being stolen by methamphetamine addicts; copper wiring.

Lt. Dan Bressler of the Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Department says with tougher laws regarding the sale of chemicals used for the manufacture of methamphetamine, addicts are stealing copper wire because it provides them with quick cash in order to buy meth. Copper wiring goes for about $3.50 a pound.

Recently several spools of #12 copper wiring were stolen from the Columbia Elementary School construction site. Sierra Rock in Jamestown has been victimized for several cases of brass and copper wiring over the last couple of years.

In Fresno a pair of thieves, over a couple months time, stole 32 miles of copper wiring valued at $300,000. Total street lights disabled; 800.

Should you have knowledge of any copper wiring theft, contact the Sheriff´s Department immediately at 533-5815.
