Abstinence Assembly Sparks Unforeseen Controversy

Angels Camp, CA — A now cancelled assembly on abstinence has caused quite a hubbub for Bret Harte High School.

Speaker Jason Evert was planned for a school-wide assembly last Thursday. Some parents were concerned over Evert´s possible religious message.

School District Superintendent Michael Chimente says that was never his intent and there are two versions of Evert´s talks – one for Catholic and one for public schools.

Chimenti says his goal was to send a message that is clearly defined in education code that abstinence is the certain way to prevent unintended pregnancy and STDs. Unfortunately though, the messenger was distracting from the message.

Chimenti says the reason he cancelled the assembly was because parents weren´t notified within 14 days as required in the education code.

He says the district is exploring whether to have Evert return or bring in a new speaker.
