Many Attend 1st Annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Tuolumne County

Sonora, CA– Many Mother Lode residents may have the thoughts of those who lost their lives in service after the 1st California Fallen Firefighters Memorial Tuolumne County today.

The memorial was held at the Courthouse Park in Sonora at noon. There, several organizations came together to recognize those who lost their lives in the line of duty. Following the National Anthem, Supervisor Mark Thornton gave a speech in gratitude to the men and women who serve in the line of work.

Shortly after, members of the US Forest Service, Tuolumne County Administration, City of Sonora, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, recognized those who lost their lives in service. Each name was followed by the ringing of a bell.

The Ceremony was concluded with a bugle solo of Taps. CDF Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit Chief Michael Noonan says the service was filled with sadness, gratitude, and pride for those who served.

He adds that he thinks the service was important not only for those in the service, but also for the community, to recognize the huge sacrifice that their firefighters make in this area. Officials say next year´s Memorial Service will be held Friday, October 12, 2007, at noon.
