Judge Turns Down Atheist’s Suit Challenging ‘In God We Trust’

Sacramento, CA– An atheist who said the use of “In God We Trust” on U.S. coins violated his First Amendment rights.

Newdow — a Sacramento doctor and lawyer — argues that the placement of ´In God We Trust´ on the coins and currency was done by the government for religious purposes and to have religious effects. It´s not the first time he´s challenged the government. Newdow is the same man who previously challenged the use of the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools because it contained the words “under God.”

He lost that legal battle, but the issue did make it to the Supreme Court. The court did not rule on the merits of the case, only Newdow´s standing to sue on behalf of his elementary school-aged daughter.
