Mele Not Surprised Proposition Six Failed

Sonora, CA — While disappointed, Tuolumne County Sheriff Jim Mele expressed no surprise that Ballot Measure #6 overwhelmingly failed on a statewide basis Tuesday.

Prop. 6 would have increased the state´s general fund spending to local law enforement agencies from seven-tenths of one percent to one percent. Proponents of the Ballot Measure felt this would have stablized funding.

In Tuolumne County it was a 71-29 percent loss for Prop. 6. In Calaveras County it was a 73-26 percent NO vote. Statewide it was 69 percent voting NO and 30 percent voting YES.

Mele was not surprised because he feels this is an extremely difficult time to be asking the public for funding even though he believes public safety should always be the top priority of state and local governments.
