Moving County Seat To Jamestown Loses Steam

Sonora, Ca — Fourth District Tuolumne County Supervisor Mark Thornton again brought up the idea of moving the county seat from Sonora to Jamestown at today´s Supervisors meeting, but the idea seemed to die off as there was not a motion by any of the other Board members to look into creating an economic feasibility study.

Thornton said a move out of Sonora could help eliminate the high amount of traffic in the downtown area and increase the County´s revenue stream from a potential rise in sales and property taxes. If investigated further, the Jamestown Mine Site would have likely been the proposed location for the Government Center.

Before the county seat could ever be moved, it would have to be placed on the ballot and approved by voters on 2/3 margin.
