Charter School Up For Debate

Sonora, CA– The Tuolumne County Board of Education will hear an appeal Thursday by a group hoping to open a Golden Lakes Charter School in the Don Pedro area.

A request was voted down by the Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unified School District earlier this year, and an appeal has been made to the County Board of Education. “There are definitely people that would like to see it happen and others that don’t think it is a good idea,” says Joe Silva, County Superintendent of Schools. “Our Board is going to sift through that information, probably ask a lot of questions, and then make a decision.”

The proposed school would have around 120 students and likely open in 2012, if approved. The location has not been finalized, but it is expected to be near the existing Don Pedro High School. The County Board of Education meeting will begin at 5pm, Thursday at Sonora Elementary School.
