San Andreas Shoplifting Chase

San Andreas, CA — A Calaveras County man was arrested after allegedly trying to steal a bottle of vodka from a San Andreas grocery store.

Employees at Treats Grocery Store pinned 18-year-old Matthew Garrett to the ground after they noticed that he was trying to steal the alcohol by hiding it in his pants. Garrett began fighting the employees, and they eventually allowed him to standup when he complained about not being able to breathe. As soon as Garrett saw the deputies arrive at the store, he sprinted out the back door, through Turner Park, and in between two houses. Additional deputies were called in to help chase Garrett, but he could not be located.

The Sheriff’s Department says that Garrett was later convinced by his roommate to turn himself in, and he arrived at the county jail later in the day to be arrested. Garrett faces charges of attempted robbery, public intoxication, obstructing a peace officer, and attempted burglary.
