Rafting Ends In Tragedy

Tuolumne County, CA — Sheriff’s officials say 41 year old Mariati Tani of Sausalito died after the raft she was on smashed into a rock on Tuesday around 1:30pm.

They say she was rafting with her family on the Tuolumne River when they hit some turbulent rapids, termed as a class 5, and the raft got lodged on a rock. Sheriff’s Officials say most on the raft were ejected, but Tani was pinned under the water and raft for nearly 10 minutes. Guides were able to free her and gave her CPR, but it was unsuccessful.

A CHP helicopter recovered the victim and flew her and her husband to the Pine Mountain Lake airport where he met with Sheriff’s Officials.
