Calaveras Ranked Healthier Than Tuolumne

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute has ranked all but two of California’s 58 counties in terms of health.

The study included a wide variety of factors including smoking, drinking, premature death, access to medical care, access to healthy foods, obesity rates, education and income levels.

The top five healthiest counties in California were: 1. Marin 2. Santa Clara 3. San Benito 4. Placer 5. San Mateo.

The least healthy counties were: 52. Lake 53. Tehama 54. Siskiyou 55. Del Norte 56. Trinity.

The common factor in the least healthiest counties seems to be that they are located in rural and often poor areas, where residents have to travel further to seek medical care.

So how did Tuolumne and Calaveras counties fare?

Calaveras edged out Tuolumne by placing #23. Tuolumne followed closely behind at #26. Mariposa was #34.

Public data was not available for Alpine and Sierra counties.
