Sacramento, CA — A bill that would increase the state’s minimum wage is now headed to the California Senate.
AB 10 was approved in the Assembly yesterday, 42-24. The vote was mostly along party lines as Democrats were in favor and Republicans opposed. California’s current minimum wage is $8 an hour. The measure would increase it to $8.25 in 2014, $8.75 in 2015, and $9.25 in 2016. Then starting in 2017, it would be adjusted on an annual basis according to the rate of inflation. In years of negative inflation, the minimum wage would remain the same.
Opponents of the hike argued that it is bad for business at a time when the state’s economy is still trying to get back on track.
