Fewer California Students In Financial Jeopardy Schools

Tuolumne County, CA – While some area schools are on the state’s financial danger list, California’s Top educator says 2.1 million California children now attend schools in districts that are in financial Jeopardy. That’s down half a million from the 2011-12 school year.

Sonora Union High School and Calaveras Unified School are just two of the 124 local educational agencies or LEA’s on the Qualified Certification list. That means they may not meet their financial obligations for the current or next two years.

Sonora High School Superintendent Mike McCoy says he’s confident they will be off the list next year. McCoy says,”We actually provided a retirement incentive and we are going to have significant salary savings now. We’ve continued a freeze on spending and we’re being very cautious about long term spending and obligations.”

Seven schools, none in the area, made the Negative certification which means they don’t have the funds they need currently or for the next two years.
