Sonora Council Schedules Special Meeting

Sonora, CA — After canceling this week’s meeting due to low snow, the Sonora City Council will meet on Monday to discuss a variety of items.

The council will have a discussion about the possibility of taxing marijuana delivery services. We reported earlier that the state has finalized its regulations regarding enforcement of the legal cannabis market, and one of the aspects is that commercial marijuana deliveries cannot be banned by cities and counties.

Under Measure N approved by city of Sonora voters last November, the council can impose a tax of up to 15-percent of gross receipts on marijuana businesses. City staff is recommending the council begin the process of implementing a 15-percent tax on non-store-front cannabis deliveries made in the city.

Also on Monday, there will be a vote to approve the annual financial audit for the fiscal year that ended July 30, discussion about the appointment of a city clerk, and a report about the League of California Cities Rural Working Group.

The meeting will start at 3:30pm.
