Sonora Wendy’s Project Hits Hurdle

Sonora, CA — Seeking more information about traffic and safety related concerns at the site, the Tuolumne County Planning Commission postponed action on approving construction of a Wendy’s on Mono Way.

The fast food restaurant is proposed to be built at the intersection of Mono Way and Fir Drive, situated across the street from rival McDonalds.

Recapping last night’s planning commission meeting, Tuolumne County Assistant Community Resources Agency Director of Development Quincy Yaley tells Clarke Broadcasting, “There was testimony given by a number of adjoining property owners that expressed concern over a range of issues, but the planning commission really honed in on safety, related to traffic. The planning commission, after deliberation, decided to send the project back to the planning division staff so that we can further work with the applicant to address and identify any traffic safety issues that may result from the project.”

The planning commission dismissed concerns brought up from neighbors regarding land use, because the property is already zoned commercial, and the Wendy’s project is a permitted use. The reason it was sent back to staff was solely the traffic and safety aspect. The vote was 6-0.

The project applicant is Clovis businessman Sukniit Sangha. The plan includes construction of the 2,568 sq. ft. restaurant, an outdoor patio, 28 parking spaces and an onsite bike rack. The Wendy’s project will likely return to the planning commission sometime before the end of the year.
