Senator Alvarado Gil Praises Court Ruling Challenging New Gun Law

Sacramento, CA — Senate Bill 2 would ban Californians from carrying firearms in most public places and many private facilities that have high foot traffic.

It was a high-profile law that was approved this past legislative session and signed by Governor Gavin Newsom. It was set to take effect on January 1st, but a federal judge has temporarily blocked it, arguing that it would effectively abolish Second Amendment rights.

Mother Lode Democratic Senator Maire Alvarado-Gil is praising the ruling. She says, “The Second Amendment is a cornerstone of our nation’s history, and while we recognize the importance of public safety, it is imperative that we strike a balance that respects the rights of responsible gun owners.”

Alvarado-Gil notes that the bill is opposed by many constituents of her district.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has stated that he plans to appeal the ruling. The case could go all the way to the US Supreme Court.
