CA Attorney General Investigating Misappropriation Of Funds In Angels Camp

Angel Camp, CA — The California Attorney General’s office is getting involved with an investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds by former Angels Camp City Administrator Michael McHatten.

Today the Angels Camp Police Department released a statement in reaction to public questions regarding its role in the investigation. The department noted that the release was done “in the interest of maintaining transparency and trust with the public.”  It went on to state that in February of 2017 information was presented to the Police Chief and the Calaveras County District Attorney regarding approximately $29,000.00 in public funds that were potentially misappropriated by McHatten during his time with the City of Angels Camp. The Angels Camp Police Department reports that due to the nature of the allegations, and lack of local investigative resources, the decision was made to seek outside, independent investigative assistance.

The release also acknowledged that “city staff is cooperating fully with their (the state’s) investigation, and providing whatever assistance is requested to facilitate a timely and thorough investigation. Since an outside law enforcement agency is handling the investigation, it would not be appropriate to comment further on this matter.”

Angels Camp Police report that most if not all of the monies in question have since been repaid to the city.  This issue was referenced in the recent Grand Jury report, click here for that story.
