Two German Tourists Seriously Injured In HWY 49 Crash

Mokelumne Hill, CA – The CHP released new details on the motorcycle wreck in the Mokelumne Hill area of Calaveras County involving two men on a motorcycle that hit a guardrail on Highway 49.

As earlier reported here, the crash happened on the highway just north of Gold Rush Lane and Highway 26 around 10:15 a.m. Thursday morning. The CHP reports that driver 70-year-old Jurgen Jacobi and passenger 71-year-old Siegbert Koenig, both from Germany, were riding a 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound at about 30 mph heading into a left-hand curve. CHP Officer Toby Butzler indicates, “It was an unsafe speed and the bike went off the roadway and smashed into the east shoulder guardrail. Both riders were ejected from the motorcycle and they sustained major injures.”

The CHP reports the wreckage blocked the northbound lane for about an hour as emergency crews worked to treat the men and a tow crew cleared the debris. Butzler adds that neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor in the collision.
