Update: Severe Weather Alert For A Portion Of Tuolumne County

Update at 3:15 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Western Tuolumne County until 3:45 p.m.

Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm
capable of producing large hail up to ping pong ball size and
damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. This storm was located 10 miles
south of Smith Station, or 26 miles southeast of Sonora, and moving
east northeast at 30 mph.

Update at 2:45 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northwestern Tuolumne County until 3:15 p.m.

At 2:43 p.m., doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing large hail up to ping pong ball size and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. This storm was located over Smith Station, or 18 miles southeast of Sonora, and moving east northeast at 35 mph.

Update at 2:15 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect until 2:45 p.m. for Southwestern Tuolumne and Northwestern Mariposa counties. At 2:08 p.m., doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing quarter size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. This storm was located near Chinese Camp, or 8 miles south of Sonora, moving northeast at 20 mph, according to the NWS. The areas impacted include Keystone and Chinese Camp.

Original post at 2:05 p.m.: Tuolumne County, CA — The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning for Southwestern Tuolumne and Western Mariposa counties until 2:15 p.m.

Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado. This dangerous storm was located 10 miles north of Winton, or 12 miles north of Atwater, and moving northeast at 35 mph, according to the NWS.   This tornadic thunderstorm will remain over mainly rural areas of Western Mariposa and Southwestern Tuolumne and north central Merced Counties.

The NWS instructs persons in these areas to take cover immediately. Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoid windows. If you are in a mobile home or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
