West Point, CA — The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office reports that a 14-year-old male from West Point died after being shot by another male teen while bird hunting.

It happened at 3:40pm Wednesday in the 1100 block of Bald Mountain Road in West Point.

Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson, Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt says, “The 16-year-old accidentally shot the victim. The victim sustained injuries to his face and upper body. Fire personnel and paramedics arrived on scene and transported the victim to Mark Twain Hospital. The victim later succumbed to his injuries.”

The Sheriff’s Office responded to investigate the incident, and the specific details that led up to the accidental shooting have not been released. But Sgt. Eberhardt adds, “The 16-year-old suspect was arrested for discharge of a firearm in a grossly negligent manner, which is a felony, and turned over to the custody of the Calaveras County Juvenile Probation Department.”
