A Fatal Crash Sparks A Fire In Mariposa County

Mariposa County, CA — One person died in a solo-vehicle wreck east of the community of Mariposa that then ignited a brush fire.

The accident happened Thursday at 10:40 p.m. on Harris Road just east of Highway 49. The CHP reports, 68-year-old John Pool was driving a 1986 Volkswagen Microbus westbound, when he lost control of the van on a curve. It went off the roadway, down a dirt embankment, overturning on its roof. The van then burst into flames igniting a vegetation fire. Cal Fire and Mariposa County Fire were able to quickly contain the three to five acre grass fire.

Pool died from the injuries he sustained in the crash, according to the CHP. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused Pool to lose control of the van.
