Forest Service Igniting Fire Control

Sonora, CA – Over 170 acres of the Stanislaus National Forest land will be set ablaze starting on Monday, weather permitting.

The burn on the Mi-Wok Ranger District will last for seven days, according to forest officials.  The understory prescribe burn is located a half mile south of Long Barn on Forest Road 3N90, close to the 3N01 intersection.  Forest spokesperson Veronica Garcia says, “The goal of this prescribed burn is to reduce fuel and also prevent an uncontrollable fire such as the Rim Fire.”  She adds the burn creates defensible space near communities to help firefighters when fighting a blaze.

Residents in the Mi-Wuk or Long Barn area and motorists traveling along Highway 108 may see smoke in the skies throughout the week.  Much of the smoke will be visible in the canyons during the night and early morning.
