2014 Academic Decathlon

Sonora, CA — Around 75 students from five schools took part in the 32nd annual Regional Academic Decathlon competition.

The event was held over the weekend at Sonora High School and it was hosted by the Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Office. Participating high schools were Bret Harte, Mountain Oaks, Sonora, Summerville and Tioga.

The purpose of the event was for students to experience the challenges of a team and individual academic competition. Each student competed in 10 events, including economics, art, essay, interview, math, literature, social science, speech, music and a quiz.

Summerville High School had the highest team score at 38,416, and Mountain Oaks (San Andreas) came in second at 34,453. Since they were the highest scoring teams in their individual counties, both will move on to a state competition in Sacramento from March 20-23. The teams will be raising money to fund the trip.

Also of note, the top individual scores were Summerville’s Anna Shampain in the Scholastic competition (6,412), Summerville’s Katie Freeman in the Honors competition (6,346), and Summerville’s Joey McDonald in the Varsity division (5,517).
