Stanford To Start Human Cloning

Stanford University is entering a controversial field – it´s going to clone human embryos to create stem cells for research.

Much of the research will be aimed at treating cancer. The work will be part of the new Institute for Cancer and Stem Cell Biology and Medicine. The school is being launched with a $12 million anonymous donation.

Many researchers have complained that there´s inadequate access to available stem cell lines. Only about four lines are being routinely shared.

The announcement makes Stanford the first U.S. institution of higher education to publicly embrace an effort that many consider to be cloning.
