Healthy Families Program Works, Study Says

Children in the state’s Healthy Families program have improved health and do better in school, a new study says.

Researchers have released a first-year status report on the program. Healthy Families is a state health insurance program for children of low-income families.

The survey asked about 6,000 families to rate their experience since enrolling in the Healthy Families program a year ago.

Kids in the poorest health when the started the program reported the biggest improvements. They noted a 25 percent improvement in health. And they showed a 68 percent improvement with paying attention in class and keeping up with school activities.

More than 600,000 children in California are currently enrolled in the Healthy Families program.
