Group Hopes To Block Farmers Exemption

An environmental group hopes to block California farmers trying to convince the federal E-P-A to exempt farms from air quality regulations. The Earth-justice Legal Defense Fund filed documents with the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Friday. The group says farmers need to cut pollution in central California, home to some of the nation´s dirtiest air.

The 95-thousand member California Farm Bureau has fought with air regulators since May. That´s when the Environmental Protection Agency settled a lawsuit with environmental groups to hold farms more accountable for other types of farm pollution. Farms have had an exemption from air pollution regulations for 26 years and leaders want three more years so scientists can determine how much pollution they create.
