Failed Transformer Cuts Power To 1200

Nearly 1,200 PG&E customers in the downtown Sonora area lost power Tuesday afternoon around 3:15 p.m. after a underground transformer blew and caught fire.

The unit is located under South Green Street between Bradford and Linoberg streets. That section of road behind the Union Democrat building was closed while crews did repairs.

PG&E spokesman Mark Hendrickson says power was restored by 5 p.m. to nearly all affected customers. Downtown offices, residents, county buildings and merchants were without electricity from nearly two hours. Police directed traffic around intersections where signal lights were also knocked out by the malfunction.
