Major Fire Threat For Tahoe

With all the threats facing the Lake Tahoe Basin, regulators agree the greatest is fire.

Meeting at the lake yesterday, The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency agreed that nothing could destroy the lake and its sensitive environment more than a massive wildfire.

The agency is reviewing a $26.5 million plan to begin thinning trees and taking other precautions in fire-prone forest areas.

Coe Swobe is a former Nevada lawmaker who helped establish the agency and now serves as Nevada´s at-large appointee to its governing board. He says the top goal must be preventing a catastrophic wildfire.

The discussion comes as momentum is building to take aggressive action to prevent wildfires on the scale that killed people and destroyed thousands of homes in Southern California last October.
