Doodoo Wah Tourney Benefits School Music

The fifth annual Doodoo Wah Open golf tournament will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Twain Harte golf course, with all proceeds going toward a scholarship for a Sonora High School music student. “We aren´t even taking out any administrative costs,” said Tom Jepson, the tournament organizer. “When we say benefit, we mean benefit.”

The tournament is open to the public, and golfing experience is tolerated but not required. Previous Doodoo Wah opens are remembered more for strange shots than good ones. In fact, one of the prizes, the Tim Stevenson Trophy, is for the strangest shot of the day, in commemoration of Stevenson´s own bizarre hole-in-one during the first tournament in 1999. From the No. 1 tee, he hit a pitiful slice that dribbled into the cup on the wrong hole. Other prizes are awarded for the best team score and most creative golf outfit.

The nine-hole tournament is run under a blind-handicap team scramble format. All players hit the ball each time, but only the best shots are counted toward the team´s score. “We have to do it that way,” said Ron DeLacy of the sponsoring Doodoo Wah folk music duet. “A lot of our players never played golf before, and most of the others never should have.”

A $40 entry fee covers green fees, three recycled golf balls, tees, prizes, and food at the ensuing awards banquet at the nearby Ed´s Cocktail Lounge. Space is limited. For reservations or more information, call 588-0898.
