Attorney General Could Get Involved in SFPD Problems

Attorney General Bill Lockyer´s office is reviewing a request to get involved in the fracas over San Francisco´s police department.

The city´s mayor and chief of police have asked the attorney general to investigate whether District Attorney Terence Hallinan exceeded his authority when he had a grand jury investigate the department. The grand jury this week indicted ten officers and leaders of the department, including Chief Earl Sanders.

A spokesman for Lockyer says lawyers will review stacks of documents the police department has already sent them. He says an abuse of discretion finding is “a high standard to meet.”
